How to mass delete emails in Gmail

Find what you want gone

Mass deleting starts with a good search, so you remove exactly the right mail and nothing you'll regret. Useful operators:

1. older_than:2y — old mail you've long since finished with.
2. from:example.com — every message from one sender.
3. category:promotions older_than:6m — stale marketing mail.
4. larger:10M — the big attachments actually eating your storage.

Select everything and delete

1. Run your search so only the mail you want to remove is showing.
2. Click the checkbox at the top-left to select every message on the page.
3. Click the banner that appears — "Select all conversations that match this search".
4. Click the trash-can icon. Everything moves to Trash.

Empty Trash to reclaim storage

Deleting only moves mail to Trash, where it sits for 30 days before Gmail removes it and frees the space. To reclaim storage immediately, open the Trash label and click Empty Trash now. Remember Google's free 15 GB is shared across Gmail, Drive, and Photos, so clearing large attachments helps the most.

Consider archiving instead

Before you mass delete, ask whether you really need it gone. Archiving clears mail out of your inbox but keeps it searchable forever in All Mail — so you get the clean inbox without the risk of losing a receipt or reference later. Reserve deleting for true junk and storage hogs; archive everything else.
